Gone is a dinner date, inspiration from the ’90s and attitudes as a relationship status – Tinder shows how to date a new generation in 2022
AMSTERDAM, November 30, 2022 – As 2022 draws to a close, Tinder is sharing its year in SwipeTM: from new relationship labels and stances on social issues, to real-life dating trends and new emojis popping up in chat. Year in Swipe shows which dating trends, activities and interests were most popular with Dutch daters in 2022.
Top 5 Tinder trends in 2022
# 1. Young singles (15-18 years old) see “the situation” as a real relationship situation. More than just a relationship, but not exactly a traditional one. In 2022, a “status” is defined as a casual, non-binding relationship in which that status is clearly expressed. Tinder has seen a 49%1 increase in the number of members globally who have added this new relationship status to their profile. More than 1 in 10 young singles worldwide said they would prefer positions as a way to develop a relationship with less pressure 2.
#2. The dinner date has passed. The activities we were most involved in during the pandemic seem to have stopped. Mentions of ‘Picknicken’ and ‘Museum’ in Dutch Tinder bios increased this year 2 which could mean that singles are meeting through more than just dinner and drinks these days. They choose less traditional, more realistic ways of getting to know each other. Other creative activities such as making pottery, karaoke and taking a cooking class are all featured in the top 10 activities for Tinder dates in the Netherlands.
#3. One of the most popular topics on Tinder profiles has been the zodiac signs. The zodiac signs Aries, Leo, and Pisces have been used heavily in profiles in the Netherlands. Globally, these were Leo, Scorpio and Cancer. Surprisingly, all of the zodiac signs were most likely a perfect match for 1 zodiac sign.
#4 Young Singles are getting inspired by the ’90s dating trends. And the fastest growing interests on Tinder worldwide were past trends like 90s Kid, Anime, and Sneakers. Even everyone’s favorite old “new” song, “Running Up That Hill” by Kate Bush, is back and featured in Spotify’s Top 10 Most Mentioned Tinder Profiles 1.
#5 Viewpoints on social issues can make or break a match. Three-quarters of singles worldwide were looking for a partner interested in social issues 2. In fact, this year so many Tinder members added the Ukrainian flag to their profile to show support for Ukraine that at one point it was in the top 10 global emojis on the app. In addition, interest in activism and polling has increased in the Netherlands this year 2.
