Judging by the logos of three well-known brands, Karvan Cévitam is ‘thirst-quenching fruity’, Teisseire is ‘pure and made with real ingredients’ and with Slimpie it is ‘responsible enjoyment’. It looks nice, which is not entirely incorrect, since the base drink is actually made from fruit. The juice of the original fruit is processed, according to Femke Boekhorst, nutritionist at Gezonden.nl. The moisture is extracted until a highly concentrated syrup or fruit concentrate is formed.
On the label of most juices, the fruit center is somewhere at the top of the list, bolstered by additives like sugars, aromas, and vitamins. Karvan Cévitam spontaneously puts “75 percent pure fruit into the bottle,” which actually contains the fruit concentrate. The difference is important, because concentration has little to do with fresh fruit, Boekhorst emphasizes. During the processing process, important components of the fruit are largely lost, such as vitamins, minerals and dietary fiber. According to Martin Kattan, Professor of Nutrition at the Free University of Amsterdam, fruit concentrate is nothing more than an “elegant form of sugar.” It does not add anything nutritionally, and only contains fruit sugars.
