On Sunday, Shotokan Karateclub Herne organized the annual National Karate Cup Dynamic Dojo National Championship at Hernekouter gymnasium – after a two-year break. The tournament is a collaboration between Shotokan Karateclub Herne, karateclub Taisho from Lede and karateclub Hiryu from Ninove. Recordings ended with an increase of a third compared to 2019. Less than 300 karatekas, mostly youngsters, from all over Belgium competed against each other. As early as 9 am, the younger participants mingled to a minimum and, according to age, entered into a 1 vs. 1 fight. The Dynamic Cup is a competition recognized by JKA (Japanese Karate Association). Perhaps this can be explained by the huge interest in the interruption of Corona and also because some clubs have had to cancel their organization in the past two years.

Young people have not forgotten about sports

Karateka Lok de Smit – Second Dan: “After the confusion and uncertainty surrounding Corona, it seems that youngsters are back in sports clubs. Many clubs are now forced to stop registration and the interest is also overwhelming for Shotokan Karateclub Herne. With only a few places Remaining, our club also flirts with freezing registration. The problem is that the upstairs room is too small to accommodate more karate.”

“Fortunately, our youth have not forgotten about sports. This is heartening not only for the local karate club Shotokan Karateclub Herne, but also for all the sports clubs that offer themselves one hundred percent to show their young audience that sports not only improve fitness. It also fights obesity, it is also beneficial for self-confidence and also teaches you how to deal with emotions such as anger and sadness when losing. Moreover, the gym is the ideal place to make more new friends,” says Luc de Smet.

Organizational cooperation is a necessity

Also Head Coach at Shotokan Karateclub Herne Didier Van Heymbeeck (3rd Dan JKA – Japan Karate Association), Frank Van de Mergel (5th Dan JKA) of Taisho Karateclub Lede and Jean-Pierre Meert (6th Dan JKA), Founder and Director of Taisho Karateclub Lede They sincerely agree. Coach Jean-Pierre Mert: “It is undeniable that the 2022 edition of the Dynamic Cup has been very successful. With hundreds of pupils, juniors, minors, cadets, pupils, young and old, they descended from all over Belgium to Herenkutter. In terms of the number of participants, the provinces of It is East Flanders and Liege that mainly take the crown. Keeping all this in the right direction requires not only experience, but also a lot of commitment and discipline. The fact that we can count on the cooperation of three clubs from an organizational point of view is a bonus. Starting the dynamic cup alone As a karate club it is a losing cause in advance.”

Winner Maxime Galette

The Dynamic Cup is a competition recognized by JKA. Also this year there was a Challenge Cup winner, winner of both kata and kumite. This Challenge Cup went to Maxime Galet from Ghent Karateclub Shinbu. Maxim is an upcoming talent and a member of the national team. As a junior he was repeatedly selected for international competitions. He also won the Dynamic Cup in 2017.

Also local talent

Luc de Smet: “Laura Desmidt has also done an excellent job. She won the bronze medal in the tournament held in Herne. Laura also took fourth place in the Kata (style exercise) on October 2 in Kortrijk in the Flemish Championship in the School Student Series. She was selected for the championship The Belgian (8 Flemish picks and 8 Walloons) on October 16 in Braine-l’Alleud, there she also finished fourth. We are very proud to have Belgium No. 4 in our midst.”
