In the early morning of March 6, 2022, Mickey Ort was killed in a violent accident. Her friend Tom was badly injured in the accident and she is barely saved. The suspect is responsible and admits that he stabbed them several times in the chest and upper body with a knife. Ben, Mickey’s roommate, was stabbed by a knife inflicted by the suspect. Before that he threw a Molotov cocktail at the window of the house. The officer: “What the suspect did should not have happened and cannot be justified in any way.” The 27-year-old suspect from Lake will be sentenced to twenty years in prison and TBS with compulsory treatment.
The suspect was obsessed with Mieke, an American student from Leeuwarden. At the beginning of October 2021, Mickey and the suspect got to know each other via Tinder. They meet and go on a date. The suspect wanted a relationship with her, while Mickey wanted to have fun during her school days without having a real, lasting relationship with the suspect. These two principles did not fit together and led to the suspect’s stalking behavior. Officer: “Sending expensive gifts when she didn’t ask for them, putting a tracker in her bike and following Mickey via the Amigos app are just a few examples of the actions the suspect took before the tragic weekend of March 6. The suspect is sorry, wants to go back in time, But it is impossible. What the suspect did should never have happened and can in no way be justified.”
The suspect also radically changed Tom’s life. He does not remember anything about the accident, but daily sees the scars that remind him of the accident and its impact. The life-saving actions of the first responders in the home ensured that there was no double murder in the subpoena, but it was close. In any case, it is not up to the suspect that Tom survived the stabbing incident. The suspect hit Tom three times in the chest, the place that contains the most important vital organs, the heart and lungs.
Officer: “What I gather from all the conversations and incidents before the weekend in question in early March is that during the relationship there were several moments of attraction and repulsion between the two. There was also Mieke’s uncertainty about the relationship on the one hand. On the other hand, there is a problem of autism. The suspect, as he doesn’t know how to act and what is socially acceptable in social situations. He just needed that clarity. I think these two components reinforced each other.” On the evening of the filing of the indictment, the hurt caused by Mickey’s renewed rejection, Tom’s presence and the last hope of the person in question, shattered as a result, appears to have been the final straw.
At the beginning of the night, the suspect already knew that Mickey and Tom were together when he drove away from Leeuwarden to Lake. After all, he had proof of this on his phone in the form of a video. I got angry at that moment. He went back to Lake and grabbed the can of petrol he had bought earlier and made Molotov cocktails. He took a hammer from the shed and a knife from the knife rack. He already had the other knife in sight. Then he returned to Leeuwarden for more than half an hour. He had plenty of time to think about his plan and its consequences. He also had time to think about the house. In the more than ten minutes he spent at home, he had time to think about his plan and he also had time not to carry out his plan.
Officer: “Given everything, I came to the conclusion that the suspect premeditated the murder of Mickey and almost killed Tom. The murder and attempted murder charges can be made lawful and convincingly proven.”
The officer: “At that moment he could still make choices and think, like a conscious choice not to harm Ben and making a plan to first throw a Molotov cocktail at the window to set off the fire alarm. And maybe he created chaos, climbed over the drain pipe, smashed the door window and then stabbed. So I came up with conclusion that the suspect is less likely to be held accountable.”
The advice of the rapporteurs, in order to reduce the chance of escalation of violence in the future, is for the suspect to receive treatment aimed at learning to relate securely, to gain more individuality and to learn to act differently in relationships with others. In addition, the suspect must learn to recognize anger and frustration, and how to deal with it, avoidance and emotional division must be broken, and must learn to channel their anger appropriately. It is advisable to impose such treatment on the suspect within the legal framework of the TBS Ranking Scale with compulsory treatment.
Officer: “The suspect robbed a young life. The next of kin must continue without Mickey. Studying and getting to know the background of part of her family was the reason why Mickey went to Holland. A place her parents thought was a safe place. Turns out it is not. Every parent’s nightmare. Suffering The unimaginable inflicted by the defendants cannot be described and poignantly expressed as father, mother and sister in the right of speech. The loss of life is the worst fact of our criminal law.”
The officer is seeking twenty years in prison for murder, attempted murder, assault, and arson as well as TBS with compulsory treatment. Since there is a suspicion of murder and attempted murder, the officer asks the court to include in the judgment that it relates to TBS Unlimited.
* TBS continues with compulsory treatment for a maximum of four years for minor crimes, but in the case of violent crimes such as murder, a judge can extend the procedure indefinitely if the chance of relapse is insufficiently reduced. TBS with compulsory treatment always ends with conditions. This means that the offender must also abide by agreements with the monitoring service after the procedure. There is no longer a maximum conditional termination limit for TBS. This means that judges can continue to extend oversight if the risk of relapse is sufficiently reduced. This can be done annually or every two years. TBS’er can appeal against any extension. (Source: https://www.rijksoverheid.nl/onderwerpen/tbs-en-overige-forensische-zorg/tbs/categories-tbs
