Princess Amalia will be there for the first time this year when her father, King Willem-Alexander, reads the throne speech. The 18-year-old Princess of Orange walks with her parents in Glasscoach during a driving tour from Nordende Palace to Koninklijke Schoburg in The Hague, where the party will take place this year.

Last weekend, De Telegraaf reported that security measures around Princess Amalia and Prime Minister Rutte have been tightened, because there are indications that organized crime has plans to launch an attack or kidnapping.

The State Information Service did not say whether additional measures were taken for the budget day. The police and the public prosecution do not make any statements on this subject.

After the throne speech, Amalia will return with her parents in the Glass Coach to Noordeinde Palace, where they will wave together on the balcony to the crowd that has gathered.

For the first time in three years, the public will be there as usual at Prinsjesdag. Due to Corona measures, the driving tour and balcony scene in Prinsjesdag for the past two years has been cancelled.

In the theater, Amalia is seated next to her aunt and uncle, Prince Constantine and Princess Laurentian. In the past, it was customary for the future heir to the throne to sit on the podium on the prince’s day.

For example, Beatrix Grandmother Amalia and great-grandmother Juliana have sat on the throne next to the Head of State since the age of 18. Since the late 1960s, the Crown Prince has been sitting in the hall next to other members of the royal house.

Amalia began her studies in Politics, Psychology, Law and Economics (PPLE) at the University of Amsterdam at the beginning of this month. Where her studies permit, she will also occasionally perform official duties in her role as heir to the throne, such as her presence today at Prinsjesdag.

A Budget Day survey conducted by Ipsos on behalf of NOS shows that nearly four in ten Dutch people do not think it is necessary for Amalia to perform in public more often, now that she is 18. The main reasons given are that the princess is still too young for it and that she needs more education.

Nearly 30 percent would like to see it in public places more often, especially on formal occasions such as National Memorial Day or at official visits and editorials.

Prince’s Day Workout

Amalia’s interest in Prinsjesdag was already evident last June, when she participated in an exercise for a riding tour with her horse Mojito. The princess, who loves to ride horses, wanted, at her own request, to experience how horses are prepared in the center of The Hague for the city of Prinsdag.

In this video, the new master Hans Veenhuijzen for the management of the royal stables explains what it takes to steer the riding tour in the right direction..

Amalia’s first official public appearance was last December, the day after her 18th birthday, when her father introduced her to the Council of State. In preparation for the monarchy, she is allowed to attend advisory division meetings, but has no right to vote. You are expected to attend meetings on a regular basis only after studying.

Last week, I served with King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima a dinner for members of the Council of State. For Amalia, it was the first time she had been a hostess during the biennial dinner at Nordende Palace.
