Brothers Kevin, 34, and Sven, 30, are transporting the Harlem kids again

Kevin (34) and Sven Boelsma (30) are two passionate brothers who love sports. They love to share this passion with the children during their after-school sports care in Schalkevik. Their goal? Get the kids off those screens and get them moving outside again.

Kevin and Sven did this work for the first time in Amsterdam. There they saw how successful it was. Sven: “Children are more likely to choose a tablet than play outside; something the coronavirus has boosted. That’s why parents – especially in cities – are looking for ways to get their kids to exercise more, preferably in nature.”

When Kevin settled in Schalkwijk, there were no extracurricular sports centers in Harlem. After a while he got tired of traveling to Amsterdam and started itching. Kevin laughs: “Svin and I said to each other: How cool would it be if we could make this for the kids in Harlem in our backyard!”

Great after school

The brothers looked around the neighborhood and their eyes fell on Hockey Club Sachsenburg. A site with the facilities they were looking for: artificial turf pitches, large indoor space, and secure fencing. On September 28, 2020, their sports shelter is gone cool after school It started here with 19 kids. They now look after 67 children a week and stand, with at least 62 waiting places on Monday. Kevin: “We never dreamed that things would go so well so quickly. Soon we will be going from 20 to 30 kids a day. By doing this, we are keeping a close eye on the fact that we continue to deliver the same quality and that everyone is having fun.”

sumo wrestling

The brothers send out a monthly newsletter with planned sports. There are many surprises between them. Sven: “Kids usually follow their friends when choosing sports. For example, you see that boys often play soccer and that hockey is popular with girls. Most kids don’t even know what other sports there are. That’s a shame, because there are so many options”.

No crazy sport here. Think fencing, archery, skateboarding, golf, climbing, trampoline, kickboxing, and the attack course. Even sumo wrestlers in those suits come.

Sports are often associated with the season. For example, you can snowboard in winter and choose that ballsGlasscroquet And volleyball. During Formula 1, they race with go-karts and during the Tour de France with balance bikes. Sven laughs: “If only we had such a beautiful sports center in the past!”

behavior and nutrition

Every day they take the kids with black and red cargo bikes from school. Kids get healthy snacks to get needed energy. Such as fruit, vegetables or bread. There is no place for sugars with brothers. Kevin: “Exercise and healthy nutrition are the building blocks of your future. It would be crazy to introduce sports without an eye for healthy food.”

Of course, Kevin and Sven would love if the kids joined in a sport through them later. They stress that they especially want to help children develop as a person. Sven: “Sports is the perfect way to do that. You learn to work together, perform in a team, treat each other with respect. You also learn how to deal with setbacks, because of course you can’t always win. Hopefully this will really help the kids in the future.”

Happy with colleagues

Boys notice everything that builds cool after school It was a good decision. There is a nice connection with the parents and the GGD as well as with each other. Kevin: “We can define everything ourselves and complement each other perfectly.” Fortunately, the brothers do not have an occupation problem. Sven: “We are very happy with our colleagues Marina and Mike. We would never have been successful without them. They represent the same quality that we offer and we are very proud of that.”

The brothers envision future expansion: multiple locations in Harlem, provided they can guarantee the quality. First expand the current site. In addition to a busy work week with all the kids, making plans for the future and their family life, active boys also find time to exercise themselves. Sven laughs: “There are 24 hours in a day, so we’ll take it!”
