STELLENDAM Karin van Toor (53 years old) has taken an important step with her Musica EduArta and related practice Sense for Learning. Karin van Toor has been known for over 25 years as an inspirational piano teacher at Goeree-Overflakkee. But she is more than just a professional piano teacher. Through her practice Musica EduArta, she performs a somewhat unique role in the educational field by successfully combining music education with the training and guidance of talented children. I discovered that learning about the music industry was really beneficial to them and decided to specialize in the field of talent by studying at the Radboud Center for Social Sciences in Nijmegen. After that, I became interested in learning to learn, through study skills, learning techniques and memory. To specialize in this too, I took a course in the Studielift. This led to the start of a second practice in April: Sense for Learning. From here she guides and trains both gifted and non-gifted children who need appropriate support in the areas of underachievement, fear of failure, and learning how to actually learn.

very smart

“(Supposedly) gifted children can often be passive, listless, unmotivated, underperforming,” Karen says. “Or just be aggressive, stubborn, and frustrated. They have very different interests from school. If these children received an approach and professional guidance, because they really need it, you will see amazingly beautiful things happen, they become excited and excited again.I work on this in my practice Musica EduArta, through freedom and openness, no rules or school activities, but by working from passivity to activism and creativity …but then it often turns out that they have no idea how to actually learn. Learning and memory strategies are missing because they are not always demanded. They can then move on to my Sense for Learning practice, where I also mentor adults and non-gifted people” .

unique method

Karen has developed a unique music method to make the most of talented individuals’ abilities. This means developing mindset, challenge, strategy, execution, and communication. “This method can be widely used, both at school and during studies, or for personal development,” explains Karin. It provides talented individuals, as well as their parents, with a good view of themselves and their opportunities for growth and development. It shows how they can achieve their goals, teaches them to learn, and gives insight and motivation to take actual action and find renewable energy to keep growing! And of course, this requires customization for each student in particular. “

in the fresh air
Although the warm environment of Karin’s home is a nice place for children to train, this was not always practical. That’s why Karin set out to find an outdoor training space. It became an office space in the industrial building Nijverheidsweg 21. Although no longer in the house, the table and chairs that were used in the home’s condition can also be found on the new site. “This gives off a familiar image and also retains the homey character here.”

Talented Center

Karen is especially happy with her new training space. The first step could be to create a new center in the area for gifted children, where the door is wide open for them and their parents, where not only discussions take place, but also workshops and trainings can be offered. Yes, as I explicitly mention the children’s parents or guardians, because they are the ones who guide the children in daily life. That is why it is important that they also participate in the training of the children.”

safe environment

“But the most important thing about the new training space,” explains Karen, “is that it can provide a safe and engaging environment for children, where they can be themselves, not have to adapt, but discover what makes them excited. An environment where they are seen and where there is understanding and where possibilities are considered. Depending on their particular interests we then start working, either individually or in an extra extracurricular class, and then you see the kids change!
