Your child will have a bowel examination. In this folder you can read how to prepare your child for this examination with Picoprep.

From three days before the examination

From three days before the examination, your child may not eat foods with seeds and seeds. These can block the endoscope. An endoscope is a flexible tube with a small camera on the end. The image from the camera is displayed on the screen.

Below you can read about what your child can and cannot eat.

What can your child eat?

  • Breadcrumbs, white or light brown bread with margarine or butter.
  • Pie or beauvertis (without whole grain or multigrain).
  • Lean meats (eg pork, roast beef, or chicken breast).
  • Cheese, boiled eggs, sprinkles, chocolate, honey, syrup and seedless jam.
  • Ripe, preserved fruit or fruit without seeds, fibers or rind. Apple sauce, fruit sauce and banana.
  • Soup with chunks of meat, noodles and/or soup balls (without vegetables).
  • Potato, white rice, pasta and pasta.
  • Lightly roasted lean meats (eg steak, beef, pork steak and pork tenderloin), fish or chicken (skinless).
  • Cooked vegetables: cauliflower, broccoli florets, carrots.
  • Custard, pudding, cottage cheese or yogurt.

What should your child not eat?

  • Whole-grain products: Seeded bread, whole-wheat bread, whole-wheat pasta, multigrain, brown rice.
  • Fibrous vegetables such as asparagus, celery, sauerkraut, kidney beans, green beans, leeks, peas, legumes, bean sprouts, corn, mushrooms, tomatoes, onions, garlic, spinach, dandelion, peppers and raw vegetables.
  • Orange, grapefruit, tangerine, kiwi, blackberry, grape, strawberry and dried fruits.
  • Nuts, Peanuts, Seeds/Musli.

One day before the examination

NB!
Your child may not eat solid food from 12:00 until after the examination. Your child may drink clear liquids. The more your child drinks, the cleaner the gut will be.

  • Start your day with a light breakfast (two crackers or a slice of bread with toppings). Your child can drink a cup of tea with this. Your child may then drink as usual when he is thirsty.
  • From today, your child may not drink carbonated liquids, dairy products, coffee, red fruit juices, red orange juice, cloudy fruit juices with pulp and alcohol, but only clear liquids.
  • However, your child may drink clear liquids: water with or without flavoring, clear fruit juices, clear tea, sifted broth (such as from broth cubes) and orange juice.
  • Your child today begins to wash his bowels with picoprep.

How do you take picoprep?

  1. Fill a glass with 150 ml of cold water.
  2. Empty the first amount of picoprep into the glass according to this table:

up to two years 1/4 bag
2 to 5 years half a bag
5 to 10 years one bag
Older than 10 years one bag

3. Stir for 2 to 3 minutes until the solution stops fizzing and dissolves completely.
4. Have your child drink the cup in one go at 12 noon.
5. Then ask your child to drink a clear liquid of your choice from noon to 4 pm according to this schedule:

6. Then dissolve the second amount of Picoprep according to the schedule

Older than 10 years one bag

7. Have your child drink the cup at once at 8 pm.
8. In the following hours until midnight, have your child drink clear liquids according to this schedule:

Examination day

Let your child drink a clear liquid (100ml per hour) from the moment you wake up, until your child goes to the operating room or endoscopy department for examination.

Tips for using Picoprep

The laxative does not taste good. That is why we advise your child to:

  • Drink a coolant laxative.
  • Drink the laxative through a straw.
  • Add a little lemonade or lemon juice.
  • Use chewing gum in between.

Contact the children’s department at:

  • vomiting;
  • cloudy stools
  • stools that have not started after your last dose of picoprep
