The death toll from the Texas elementary school shooting has risen to 22, including 19 children outside the country

UpdateAn 18-year-old man committed a massacre on Tuesday at an elementary school in the US state of Texas. According to the latest reports, 19 children and two teachers were killed. The shooter was also killed.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott said at a news conference earlier that the gunman, who shot his grandmother before entering Robb Elementary School in Uvald, was shot dead by police. The details of the circumstances of the accident were not revealed until the investigation was completed.

The perpetrator, Salvador Ramos, was himself a resident of Ovaldi and a student at the local high school. He was said to have been carrying a pistol and possibly a rifle. He entered the school and fired a pistol around her. “He shot and killed the students and the teacher in a horrific and incomprehensible way,” Governor Greg Abbott said. The ages of the children range from 7 to 10 years.

The District Board of Education announced via Twitter at around 2.15pm local time (9.15pm Dutch time) that a gunman was roaming the primary school, which has fewer than six hundred students. It was said that shots were heard and the gunman had then holed up in the building. As a precaution, all schools in the area have been closed. People have been urged not to come to schools anymore.

Unknown number of injured

In addition to the deaths, the wounded are treated in several hospitals in the region, but the exact number of victims is still unknown. The University Hospital in nearby San Antonio reported on Twitter that it was caring for the victims of the shooting: a 66-year-old woman and a 10-year-old girl, both of whom are said to be in critical condition. It is unclear if they have died since then. Two officers were also hit by gunfire, although their injuries were minor, according to Texas Governor Abbott.

Uvalde is located in Texas, about 85 miles west of San Antonio. About 16,000 people live there. The suspect’s motives have not been released. The authorities announced that the school will remain closed until the end of the year. Psychological assistance will also be organized for those who need it. Half-mast US flags will be flown through Saturday, by orders from US President Joe Biden.

After the incident, the officers escorted the children present to places where their parents could take them.
