Albert (57) spent €5,000 on alpaca this year: “I sold my horse and boat” | expensive hobby

expensive hobbySports, collecting or creativity: we all have hobbies. But some people spend a lot more on it than others. Every week we ask someone about their expensive hobby. This week: Albert Segers (57) spent €5,000 on alpacas this year.

How did this happen?
“I’ve always had animals: horses, sheep and even bees. I traveled a lot before corona time, but then I could take care of the animals by the neighbor. This is not possible with alpacas because they are shy animals. They are used to their owners. Now that I no longer travel because of Corona. It’s time to take the alpaca.”

Why alpacas?

They are the most beautiful animals in the world. They are curious and swear when someone comes over. It also radiates positive energy. But they are not as cuddly as they look in the photos, they are quite capricious. You need a lot of patience with alpacas. At first I ran very fast towards them and they immediately went away. They know me now. As soon as I call the ‘boys’, they are already there.”

I found my alpaca on the internet with someone who wanted to give up. I bought three: together they cost 2,900 euros

So it’s an expensive business, keeping an alpaca?
,,Believes. I sold my horse and boat and with this money I bought an alpaca last March. Alpacas cost between 1,000 and 5,000 euros, females are more expensive. I found my alpaca on the internet with someone who wanted to give up. I bought three: together they cost 2,900 euros. The three men.”

, but with only animals you are not there yet in terms of costs. I already had a fence around the horse pasture, but it had to be adapted so that the alpacas would not put their heads or legs between them. That was a good investment. I also installed a frost free water pipe for drinking water. They also have special feed and hay: on an annual basis it costs about 1,500 euros. And they need special scissors for alpacas.”

Oh yes?
Yes, because a person who shears sheep usually cannot shear an alpaca. This is why once a year that special someone from the Ghent comes to trim their hooves, clean their teeth, and shave them. This costs about 70 euros per animal. And then they get their vaccinations at the vet.”

Do you spend more on this hobby?
I put eight cameras in the meadow and a stable connected to the TV. This way I can monitor the alpacas from the bed, haha. The first thing I do in the morning is turn on the TV to see where they are. The last thing I do at night is watch the alpacas. And when I wake up at night, I look at them again.”

“I also have alpaca gadgets on it: a duvet cover, a T-shirt, a cuddly toy, a keyring and stickers. I just absolutely love those monsters. I also had a number plate made for my car with the word alpaca on it. Unfortunately, you are not allowed to use it in the Netherlands, but You are allowed one kilometer across the border with Belgium.”
