Ermelo (KNHS) – Five players from TeamNL will travel to the prestigious competition in Rome in fourteen days for the first five-star Nations Cup of the season. It’s also the debut for Guus Lansink in his role as Orange’s national coach. The competition near Villa Borghese in the heart of Rome is an important first step towards the World Jumping Championships in Herning at the beginning of August. “My first national game as a national coach. I am already feeling healthy nervous,” says Lancink.
CSIO Rome in Piazza di Sienna, one of the showjumping classics, this year it will be 89ste Once organized. The Nations Cup on Friday afternoon, May 27 and the five-star Grand Prix on Sunday, May 29 are important competitions for national coach Jose Lansink in the run-up to the World Jumping Championships in Denmark. During the tournament in Herning, an Olympic ticket for Paris can already be obtained if the Dutch showjumping team achieves the top five.
Five Nations Cups
Until Jos Lansink announces his World Cup selection, there are five country competitions on the calendar. Roma and Aachen are separate matches. These from Sankt Gallen, Rotterdam and Falsterbo are part of the FEI Nations Cup Series in the European First Division. After the World Cup at Herning, the team’s competition in Dublin follows in the series. When TeamNL jumpers can qualify for the final in Barcelona through all four competitions, they defend the champions. Last year, the team made up of Harry Smulders, Willem Greif, Michael van der Vleuten and Sunny Thijsen won the final at Real Club de Polo.
Before the start of the season, Jos Lansink has set a schedule with his riders that will lead to the best possible result this season. We have set a schedule for the upcoming competitions at the end of February. Everyone knows where he stands. Something can change, but it is widely confirmed.” For the match in Rome, the national coach chose five groups, four of which will be drawn. The team calculates the three best results for each moto. “My first national match as a national coach. I’m curious,” Jos Lansink laughs. “Yeah, I do feel totally healthy stress. Roma is an important note towards Hering’s World Cup. That’s really in the back of my mind.”
Willem Gref, winner of the Dutch title last month, will take their top horses Highway TN and Grandorado TN to Rome. For the team, the choice falls on Grandorado TN. Bart Bles finished second with Gin D at the Dutch Championships in Deurne. For the Nations Cup, he will invite jockey from Babberich Kriskras DV, with whom he competed at the European Championships in Riesenbeck last year.
Rottener Gore Frieling has a very talented horse with Long John Silver 3. They have already proven it with a 4th place in the Dutch Championships and 3rd place at the Doha World Champions Grand Prix at the beginning of March.
At the beginning of this week, Michael Greve achieved top 10 positions at the Mannheim Grand Prix with his mighty mare Fyolieta and they won the Grand Prix of Exloo twice earlier this year. They also travel to Rome. Neighbor Marc Hotsager was the Dutch champion in 2020 with Dante NOP of Sterrehof as they take their Olympic experience from Tokyo to the Italian capital.
“Team Roma is a mixture of young and experienced horses. Willem, Gore and Michael’s horses do not have experience in the five-star Nations Cup, but Bart and Mark’s horses do. In principle, all the riders have one horse that makes it to the World Cup. It is likely that Horses keep growing, but we want to give them plenty of time to develop anything and not rush into it,” says Lancink.
