M Jizen is all about children (and how to raise them) | behind the scenes

From pregnancy and childbirth issues to puberty: In AD Family, we highlight all things children and parenting. Tips, personal stories and news background for everyone who plays an active role in a child’s life.

In addition to news and sports, AD also pays attention to what we call service journalism. This is, as the name implies, journalism that serves as a reader’s service: answers to questions from everyday life that really help you as a reader. AD works with eight different focus areas, which are also called service areas: car, money, family, health, cooking and eating, technology, work and living. Each domain has a permanent editor. For AD Gezin, this is Elise Vermeeren.

Who does the AD domain family belong to?

Where can you find AD Gezin?
AD Gezin can be found on the website and via the AD App. On the main page of AD.nl you can see all areas of AD service in the upper horizontal menu bar: car, money, family, health, cooking and eating, technology, work and living. If you click on “Family”, you will get to the page where all the articles on this topic are collected. In the AD Gezin application it does not have its own section, the articles are part of the normal news view.

Elise Vermeeren: For parents, people who make up a family in any way, uncles, aunts, caregivers, people who want to have children, grandparents, grandmothers: everyone has an active role in a child’s life. This is our target group, but in the end it’s a domain that works for everyone. When schools closed due to Corona, everyone wanted to know the impact on our society. Personal stories of sick children, parental alienation, children who have been healed, or miraculous pregnancies leave no one untouched.”

Why does family fit in so well with service press for advertising?

“Raising a child requires thought, but it is also a process above all else. You work on it day and night. In our field you will find advice on how to comb out lice and what to do if your child has to pee on the go. But also what a psychologist has to say about piercing children’s ears, how to talk Talk to your child about the war in Ukraine and what can help the child overcome his fear of being punctured if the vaccination has to be given.”

What major and minor themes can you find in Gezin?

“We bring the stories from the very beginning of the family to include teenage problems. The bigger topics are basically background news. What does it mean to you that childcare will soon be free? What about Corona children during the pandemic? And that extended paternity leave: how are fathers living those extra weeks with their newborn? A new one that they would have missed out on?

Are there recurring sections as well?

In “Ask the Midwife,” midwife Margot Van Dyck explains topics from her profession. For example, what is the effect of the “golden hour”, can you give birth properly if you are very fat (spoiler: yes) or how can a miscarriage happen. Other features include Well-Educated, where their questions are answered by an expert, and Mother Misery, where we highlight unexpected inconveniences and problems in the postpartum period. And Roel Ibrahim is the father of six children. Every two weeks he describes what it is like in a family with six children between the ages of 6 and 18.

Which article has been read a lot lately that is really such a defining characteristic of the family?

“After the angry episode about sexual misconduct on The Voice, everyone shouted: ‘Educate your sons.’ Nice slogan but how do you do it? Here you can read eleven practical tips, including this one: Don’t force your child to kiss this uncle if you notice. That the child does not want her, so she shows that the child can respect his limits.

Finally, do you have any three tips for our readers related to children and parenting?

When in doubt, hug your child. Research shows that it affects your child’s IQ, reduces stress, and enhances bonding. A child’s brain grows rapidly, and cuddling stimulates this growth, especially emotional brain development. If you, as a parent, don’t remember for some time, you can always go back to this basic: carrying your child.”

“Why do you not have children yet?” In our interviews with people in the process of fertility, couples who have doubts, people who do not have a partner or women who have had a miscarriage, we always hear: Don’t just ask this question, because it hurts. Or simply annoying having to justify yourself over and over again. So don’t do that.”

“Our stories about real mother’s bodies are read very well. That’s why Anna Jacobs who started an ode to the mother’s body is reminded on social media. It’s normal after pregnancy that you don’t wear jeans, sagging skin, or tiger stripes. Cover the abdomen as quickly as possible and everyone is wearing corrective clothing but why?”
