Should the Ford Bronco be available in the Netherlands? Yes we say.

Jeep Wrangler, Land Rover Defender and Mercedes G-Class. But for a long time, the largest manufacturer of SUVs in the world could not compete with a special all-terrain vehicle. Since 2020, Ford has been selling the Bronco in its country, a model that was also introduced for a while in the 1960s and is a true icon in the United States. The new Ford Bronco costs €30,000 in the US, which is a bargain (not available in the Netherlands). A heavy-duty Mustang, just like the Defender is available in three and five doors.

There’s also the Bronco Sport, which isn’t capable of all types of terrain. It also stands on the platform of a regular passenger car and has only the rugged look of other Bronco models. We’ll leave that alone. Our Ford Bronco features a ladder chassis and a solid rear axle. Basically, only the rear wheels are driven, but you can also operate the front wheels via a rotary knob in the middle tunnel.

The Bronco has several ride programs, such as Goat Mode, which turns the Bronco from a wild horse into a mountain goat. Rocky trails, loose sand, and snow: The Bronco can handle it all. Above the instrument panel, there is a button that engages the differential lock, making it easier for the driver to worry about tripping.

The Ford Bronco looks like a Playmobil

The driving force is the 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder engine, which we know from the Mustang. There is also a 2.7-liter V6 engine, which is also equipped with a turbo. But regardless of its high output of 270 or 310 horsepower, the Bronco never became a sports car. Even the V6 engine, coupled with the 10-speed automatic transmission, comes alone better with a quiet driving style and can only be tempted hardly on asphalt at a speed of 160 km / h.

But of course the Bronco’s big show starts when you get on the ground. Enable all the software that enables off-road driving – including low speed – and you can drive to the end of the world. The only thing stopping you from doing this is an empty tank.

The appearance of the Ford Bronco paints a double picture. Of course it radiates all-terrain capability, but at the same time it looks like a Playmobil. The reference to the past may have gone a bit too far. Since the off-road vehicle gets dirty, everything inside is made of hard plastic.

Plus, you can convert it – just like the Jeep Wrangler – in a variety of ways. The two-door Bronco features a roof consisting of three removable compartments: two in the front and one in the rear. The four-door Bronco has four removable roof parts, which you can remove by clicking the loose clips. You can also remove the side panels. If that’s not enough, you can remove the style-less doors and enjoy the feeling of the finished exterior. You can take them on the plane. Of course, Ford will indicate the risks in capital letters – after all, we are in America.

In the terrain, the Bronco is not to be tampered with

Off-road, the Bronco is not to be tampered with, but on the road we sometimes crave the driving characteristics with which Ford has made a name for itself in Europe. The car has a rather lucky character, just like the wild horse for which it is named. After 300 miles of frost-damaged California roads, you’ll feel like John Wayne after driving through the Great Plains.

Especially if you also turn on the front-wheel drive, the Bronco fights with all its might against exciting corners. You have to maintain a good grip on the steering wheel and the three-door Bronco turns out to be surprisingly impractical for a car of only 4.40 meters in length. The contrast with the terrain couldn’t be greater: There’s hardly a better car out there, but on the asphalt we would have liked to substitute the Bronco for that other horse, the Mustang.

Will the Ford Bronco come to the Netherlands?

This does not diminish the popularity of the Broncos in the United States; Delivery times are as long as those of a Tesla. This made Ford think. After the Mustang, the Bronco could become the second wild horse to conquer the world from Dearborn, Michigan. Ford has serious plans.

A plug-in hybrid is also planned, and it may be that this version will come to Holland and Belgium next year. Although Ford Netherlands says there are no official plans for this yet and that you will still have to seek refuge via gray imports. If the Bronco plugin arrives, we’ll also dare bet it’ll cost more than the equivalent of $30,000…


Besides the classic Mustang for gasoline fans, the Mach-E for electric fans and other GTs, there’s no Ford with so much personality and empathy. You gladly forgive it because the Ford Bronco is especially good off-road and doesn’t feel like that at home on the public road.
